The physical exhaustion was also becoming unbearable. It was awful.
Fast forward to around 2016 when I discovered medical writing by accident. I learned that it was about writing scientific documents, such as article manuscripts, drug descriptions, medical education, marketing materials, etc.
By then, I was an academic at a leading UK university, and I felt I had the necessary skills to start medical writing as a side hustle. I was drawn to it by the freedom it offered and, to be honest, the good pay. With my science background and experience, I thought it would be easy-peasy to start. But, I soon realised I was wrong.
I spent hours and hours learning about the medcomms industry. I reached out to everyone I knew with a connection to the industry, but it was all in vain. I was told over and over again that I needed some experience in the industry to join. I was so frustrated. How could I get any experience when no was willing to give me a chance?
It wasn't until 2018 that I was able to make a breakthrough. I discovered what recruiters and company managers wanted. They wanted people with certain skills and experience. So, the skills I already had, I went to work to hone them, while those I didn't have, I learned.
By the end of the year, I had my first contract as a freelance medical writer. Working only three days a week, I was earning much more than I was with a full-time job as a senior researcher and lecturer in one of UK's top universities.
Soon, many more contracts started flooding in. For the first time in a long time, I felt really secure financially and career-wise.
Today, we've observed that the pharma industry is always hungry for more scientific writers. Every single company or medcomms agency we know has vacancies for medical writers.
